The EdChoice Scholarship Program

In 2005, Ohio introduced the Traditional EdChoice Scholarship. This program provides students from designated public schools the opportunity to attend participating chartered nonpublic schools. The program expansion in 2013 allows low-income students the same opportunity to choose, even if they do not live in a designated district.

Who can apply?

Students residing in designated school districts are eligible, as well as students whose family income meets specific income guidelines (family income below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guideline).

More information about eligibility can be found here.

When do I apply?

For the 2023-2024 school year, the process begins on February 1st 2023 and concludes on June 30th, 2024. Scholarships are on a first-come, first-served basis, so the sooner you apply, the more likely you are to receive a scholarship.

How do I apply?

First-time applicants must first apply with a private school like St John Lutheran School and be accepted for admittance. Once accepted, the family must submit a Scholarship Request Form to their chosen school, along with the child’s birth certificate and proof of current address. For families applying for an expansion scholarship, income eligibility must be verified (2023-2024 requirements can be found here).

What information is needed?

Proof of current address and the child’s birth certificate must be available, as well as proof of income eligibility, if applicable.

What will it cost me?

The EdChoice scholarship covers tuition only. Application fees, registration fees, and other similar fees are the responsibility of the family.

How long does the scholarship last?

Students who receive a scholarship are eligible to renew it each school year through the 12th grade, as long as they take all required assessments for their grade level, they meet attendance requirements, and they do not move out of the school district in which they became eligible (if moving to a new school district, the new school must also be a designated EdChoice school).
